The thermodynamics of time
Wednesday 15 January 16:00 until 17:00
º£½ÇÉçÇø Campus : Pevensey 5C11
Speaker: Professor Gerard Milburn
Part of the series: Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies seminar series
Abstract:
All clocks are necessarily irreversible and thus subject to uncertainty. In the classical case the uncertainty arises from thermal noise. Their precision is limited by thermodynamics. In the quantum case the uncertainty arise from the nature of quantum measurement. I will discuss a number of examples of quantum clocks and highlight the key role played by measurement. I will discuss the implications for our understanding of physical time, a quantum theory of gravity and some philosophical musings.
